state's history. He became the leader of Experience Colorado Springs in 1990, first as executive director and later as

president and CEO. The local member-based organization is charged with promoting Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region as a national and international tourism destination. Over his 20-year span, Terry helped tourism in Colorado Springs grow to a $1.2 billion industry that supports 14,000 jobs.

Under his leadership, Experience Colorado Springs has won many national awards, including ten years of winning the "Gold Service Award" from Meetings & Conventions Magazine; nine years of winning the “Pinnacle Award” from the readers of Successful Meetings Magazineseven years of winning the “Top Destination Award” from Facilities and Destinations Magazine; seven years of winning the “Award of Excellence” from Corporate & Incentive Travel Magazine; and two years of winning the “Planner Choice Award” from Meeting News.  The organization ranks as one of the most consistent achievers in an industry of 400 other U.S. destination marketing organizations.

Terry was also a leader in developing the Colorado Association of Destination Marketing Associations (CADMO), of which he served as chairman.  It was with his assistance that the Colorado tourism industry learned to “speak with one voice,” eventually leading to the creation of the Colorado Tourism Office and increased tourism marketing dollars for the state.

In 2005, Terry Sullivan was honored with the Governor’s Tourism Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to Colorado Tourism.  In 2006, he was elected to serve as the President of the Tourism Industry Association of Colorado (TIAC), which is today’s voice of the Colorado tourism and travel industry as a whole.

In addition to his tourism background, which included stints in sales and marketing for the Caribbean and Mexico, he was an Army aviator in Vietnam, followed by service in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He is rated as a Master Aviator and has some 3,000 flying hours.  In March 2004, he participated as an organizer and crew member in the Smithsonian Museum of History’s “America’s Huey, The Final Journey Home.”

Terry retired in the spring of 2010 after two decades of helping tourism grow.  He states:  “I’ve seen some tremendous things take place at the state level, as well as in the Pikes Peak region. General William Jackson Palmer built the Colorado Springs area in 1871 with the grand vision of creating a world-class resort town. I’ve endeavored to carry on that vision throughout my tenure. It has been an honor and a privilege to lead the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau for these past 20 years.”
